The Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) made official in August, 2016 its alliance with the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), through the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This symbolizes the consolidation of efforts undertaken by IOHE President, Dr. Allan Cahoon, during his mission to Asia in February and March, 2016. During this trip, the collaboration between both organizations was reinforced. This agreement also represents a new phase in the bilateral relationship built since 2010, when the links between both organizations were strengthen during an IOHE led mission to China. Meanwhile, an important Chinese delegation participated in the first edition of the Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE), in Calgary, Canada. IOHE is one of the three founding members of the initiative and currently hosts the Executive Secretariat.

By 2011, three countries of the Americas (Argentina, Costa Rica and Peru) received Chinese delegations, thanks to the mediation of IOHE; Puerto Rico joined the group in 2012. A few months later, CAIE had Chinese participants in its second Edition, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The next year, in 2013, a group of Chinese women leaders in the field of higher education met their peers from the Americas in the third Meeting of the Space for Women Leaders from Higher Education Institutions in the Americas (EMULIES), held in Monterrey, Mexico, during CAIE’s third edition.

CEAIE is China’s nationwide not-for-profit organization conducting international educational exchanges and cooperation. Created in 1981, its goal is to meet the needs of China’s modernization construction, developing exchanges and cooperation between the Chinese educational community and other parts of the world.

IOHE is recognized internationally as the only university association actively present in the American continent. Its objective is to encourage higher education institutions and affiliated partner organizations to participate in a collaborative common area.

In this context, we invite our members who are interested in academic cooperation with China to touch base with IOHE Executive Secretariat, that will serve as liaison between your institution and this new Associated Member in order to explore collaboration possibilities between institutions from the Americas and China, such as the Chinese mission planned for the end of 2016 in Costa Rica and Mexico.
