eMOVIES
The Virtual Mobility Space in Higher Education (eMOVIES) is an initiative led by the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE), which offers participating higher education institutions (HEI) an alternative to traditional mobility models to promote international academic exchanges in higher education, by giving students the opportunity to take courses in virtual or distance mode offered by other IOHE Member Institutions.
In accordance with the principles of membership, participants will be able to receive credits for the courses or subjects taken in accordance with the prerequisites and academic criteria previously established by their home institutions.
More specifically, eMOVIES consists of a consortium of IOHE Members, where each voluntarily HEI makes available to the consortium a number of places in online courses or subjects, so that each participating institution can define a student exchange plan in accordance with the offer available within the consortium.
Each institution sets the conditions or requirements for receiving students from the exchange and undertakes to issue the corresponding certificate or recognition to those who have fulfilled the required academic and/or administrative requirements. The exchange is governed by a principle of collaboration and reciprocity that does not involve any cost to the student enrolled in the exchange.
How are we doing with eMOVIES?
During its five years of operation, the Virtual Mobility Space in Higher Education (eMOVIES) reports a total of 7,372 mobilities that occurred within the framework of the program. In 2023, mobilities increased by 48% compared to the immediately previous year, which shows that this space continues to arouse the interest of OUI-IOHE member institutions and academic communities as a mobility alternative.
According to the 2023 statistical reports, Colombia, Peru, Mexico and Argentina are the countries in which 85% of mobilities have occurred, both incoming and outgoing.
The important participation of women in this space stands out, which represents 70% of total mobilities.

In May 2023, in collaboration with Universidad Veracruzana (Mexico), Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata (Argentina), Universidad Ean (Colombia), Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí (Mexico), Universidad de Guadalajara (Mexico ), Universidad de Monterrey (Mexico), and Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá, the Pilot Project for the Implementation of the COIL Methodology in the Framework of eMOVIES was launched, which brought together teachers, COIL experts and internationalization managers linked to 14 higher education institutions in 10 countries in the Americas, to pilot the incorporation of this service to the eMOVIES program.
Thanks to the commitment of the participating institutions, their teachers, and internationalization managers, 8 academic teams were formed with which the COIL-eMOVIES pilot project was carried out, which culminated in November with the presentation, by the academic peers, of the results of the educational intervention carried out through the collaborative syllabus designed jointly.
