New composition of the Caribbean Council, same continental leadership

Management positions of the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) in the Caribbean Region for the 2016-2018 period have been ratified in the framework of the Regional Assembly which took place on June 21st at the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

In this context, the leaders who will take the reins of the region for the next two years are the re-elected Regional Vice-President, Architect Miguel Fiallo, President of the UNPHU (Dominican Republic) and the Deputy Regional Vice-President, Dr. Izelle Dubuisson Dorsainvil, President of the Université Queensland (Haití). This is the second mandate of Architect Fiallo, who was at the head of the Region between 2014 and 2016.

“The re-election of Miguel Fiallo as Vice-President of the Caribbean reflects the unity of the region and it will deepen our common development strategies”, said Dr. David Julien, Executive Director of the IOHE, who was present at the assembly.

Architect Fiallo will also count on the support of six regional councilors, who represent all the corners of the Caribbean. The team members are:

“We are confident that the appointment of Professor Beckles as regional councillor will make closer ties with other Caribbean countries, especially those Anglophones. This way, a greater participation of this important bloc will be guaranteed”, Dr. Julien added.

Members of the Caribbean Region count 54 institutions and associations in total, distributed in eight countries (Cuba, Guyana, French Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Venezuela). This year, 15% of the IOHE’s activities are carried out in the Caribbean countries, thanks to the full support of the Region institutions.
