In 2016, the Space for Women Leaders from Higher Education Institutions in the Americas (EMULIES) turned into the fourth program of the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE). This decision was made five years after the creation of the initiative that increasingly became relevant thanks to the development of activities focused on the academic exchange, as well as university management capacities and cooperation between women leaders in the field.

The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), in Lima, Peru, serves as the headquarter of the program. Likewise, M.A. Jimena Sánchez, renowned sociologist specialized in gender issues, will be leading this space that, since its creation and until November 2016, was developed by the College of the Americas (COLAM-IOHE).

M.A. Sánchez participated in the 2017 Summit of G-NET, a university network in Europe and Latin America that develops training materials and provides courses on gender and European integration. It addresses the principle of equality and gender policies in both regions. The EMULIES Executive Director will also attend the II Conference of Women Leaders in Central America on May 24 -25, 2017, at Universidad Técnica Nacional (UTN), Costa Rica.

“EMULIES and the empowerment of women at the heart of the higher education institutions in our countries are issues of major relevance set on our agenda. This evolution guarantees one more time the position of IOHE at the forefront in the most sensitive and important areas of Education and societies in the Americas”, stated Dr. David Julien, IOHE’s Executive Director.

This space has a High Council, just as the other IOHE Programs (COLAM, the Institute for University Management and Leadership -IGLU, and CAMPUS). This action aims to provide EMULIES with the institutional tools that ensure its proper operation. Thus, this entity is made up of five women from the continent with outstanding trajectory:

  • Pepi Patrón, Research Vice-President, PUCP, Peru
  • Glaucia Maria Pastore, Research Vice-President, Universidade Estadual  de Campinas, Brazil
  • Sara Ladrón de Guevara, President, Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico
  • Patricia Rojo, Director, Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina
  • Stéphanie Dion, International Relations Director, Université de Montréal, Canada

Hence, during its first virtual meeting, the members of this council appointed Dr. Patr;on as the first EMULIES President.

The V EMULIES Meeting is scheduled for July 6- 7, 2017, at the PUCP. Since 2011, four EMULIES Meetings have been organized, along with dozens of activities, in Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Mexico. In turn, dozens of higher education women leaders from the Americas and the entire world have participated in these events. For further information, please send an email to [email protected].

In this framework, female leadership will have a showcase in the Fifth Edition of the Conference of the Americas on International Education – CAIE (October 11-13, 2017, in Montreal, Canada) in which, EMULIES will play a relevant role, along with the CAIE Canada-2017 webinar anticipating  this continental encounter that will be attended by 600 higher education leaders. The e-conference, entitled “EMULIES: the Extension of Access and Stratification in Brazilian Higher Education”, will be imparted by Helena Sampai, Professor of Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil.
