The Inter-American Prize for Educational Innovation in Higher Education (MEIN) Ceremony and the presentation of the publishing which contains the finalists’ practices took place in the framework of the XXXVI General Assembly of the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) on November 25th, in the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG), headquarter of the Regional Vice-Presidency of Mexico, led by the General President Mtr. Iztcóatl Tonatiuh Bravo Padilla.

“This first initiative of the IOHE on the theme created a high interest that exceeded our expectations and allowed us to recognize the efforts carried out by the numerous institutions participating in the MEIN Prize and in all the events related to the Innovative Educational Models in the Americas. It definitely opens a space to continue working on this issue and, in fact, we have consolidated it in our IOHE’s Strategic Plan 2017-2022 that has just been approved by our General Assembly”, said the IOHE’s Executive Director, Dr. David Julien.

The winning projects are as follows:

  1. Gold Medal: Université de Montréal (Canada)
  2. Silver Medal: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Río Grande del Sur (Brazil)
  3. Bronze Medal: Benemérita Universidad  Autónoma de Puebla (Mexico)

Moreover, Honorable Mentions were given to: Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (Mexico), Universidad de Costa Rica (Costa Rica), Universidad Estadual Paulista « Julio  de Mesquita Filho» (Brazil), Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico), Universidad Nacional de Avellaneda (Argentina), Universidad Privada de Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia), Universidad de Talca (Chile), and Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá (Panama).

The three winning institutions and the eight universities, which were accredited Honorable Mentions, were selected among 80 institutional applications from which 33 came to present their projects within the framework of the IOHE’s High Management Seminar on Innovative Educational Models, held on June 23rd and 24th, 2016, in Punta Cana. The selection was carried out by a jury of experts and authorities of High Education in the continent.

This initiative was conceived in order to recognize successful practice cases of educational innovations and management in the higher education institutions of the IOHE’s members, as well as to acknowledge the valid experiences of more than two years of application and with partial results that demonstrate their impact. We are studying the possibilities of a second edition of the competition for 2017 and we invite those interested to show their interest in this regard.

A book, in which are published interesting articles on the theme written by international experts, as well as the proposals extremely detailed of the medalists and the holders of the Mentions of Honor, has been launched in the framework of the ceremony.
