The Virtual Mobility Space in Higher Education (eMOVIES) is an initiative led by the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE), which offers participating higher education institutions (HEI) an alternative to traditional mobility models to promote international academic exchanges in higher education, by giving students the opportunity to take courses in virtual or distance mode offered by other IOHE Member Institutions.

What is the Student Mobility Program?

This program enables students from different institutions and countries to participate in virtual academic mobility. Through this program, students can enroll in virtual courses offered by international partner institutions, enhancing their academic journey without leaving their home country.

This virtual mobility model promotes internationalization at home while fostering cultural and academic exchange among participating institutions. These institutions set their own admission criteria based on collaboration and reciprocity, providing a comprehensive experience that enriches students’ academic, professional, and personal development.

• Be enrolled at a higher education institution that is a member of eMOVIES.
• Review the available academic offerings on the eMOVIES platform.
• Fulfill the specific requirements and prerequisites for each course
• Adhere to the host institution’s guidelines for course participation
• Coordinate the mobility request through the international relations or academic mobility office of their home institution.
• Complete and submit the application with all required documentation before the deadline.

• Modality: 100% virtual
• Duration: Determined by the host institution’s academic calendar and the specific course length.
• Credit Recognition: Member institutions facilitate academic credit recognition in accordance with their internal regulations.
• Languages: Spanish, English, French, and Portuguese.
• Costs: Free of charge for participating students and HEIs. IOHE member institutions can join eMOVIES at no extra cost.

• Throughout its seven-year history, eMOVIES has facilitated 14,622 student mobilities. The program’s relevance continues to grow, with 2025 alone seeing a significant 12% year-over-year increase. This sustained expansion underscores the platform’s established role as a vital mobility solution within the OUI-IOHE network.Activity in 2025 was highly concentrated, with Colombia, Peru, Mexico, and Argentina accounting for 74% of all mobilities.A standout feature of the program is the strong participation of women, who represent 68% of total student mobilities.
