Inter-American School of Higher Education - ESIES

The Inter-American School of Higher Education (ESIES) is an initiative of a group of research centers and higher education institutions promoted by the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE), whose objective is to strengthen advanced training and research in the field of higher education.

Specifically, the Inter-American School of Higher Education (ESIES) seeks to:  

  • Contribute to the training of researchers in the field of higher education, promoting the development of advanced and associative research on socially relevant issues for the development of higher education in the Americas.
  • Strengthen strategic areas in
  • doctoral and post-doctoral training in higher education.
  • Produce advanced knowledge that supports decision-making in key areas for the development of higher education.
  • To implement a common space for inter-institutional collaboration and exchange that promotes the internationalization of studies and research in higher education.

The training offered by ESIES is intended for:

  • Doctoral students with research areas in the field of higher education.
  • Postdoctoral fellows in the field of higher education.
  • Researchers in higher education.

At the end of the ESIES training, the participant will be able to:

  • Acquire cutting-edge knowledge in the field of higher education, adopting a critical approach to information analysis.
  • Adapt and apply acquired knowledge to the diverse cultural, linguistic and institutional contexts of higher education in the Americas.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively the results of research and innovation in higher education.
  • Strengthen academic collaboration and networking.
  • Develop the ability to foster intercultural dialogue and the creation of intercultural learning communities in higher education.

ESIES - Edition 2025

The first edition of the Inter-American School of Higher Education – ESIES will be held in Costa Rica, from October 17 to 24, 2025, within the framework of the 9th edition of the Conference of the Americas on International Education – CAEI (San José, October 15 – 17, 2025), with the following academic program:

a) Preparatory phase (online, September 25, 2025)

  • Presentation of the School, the teachers and the participants.
  • Explanation of the readings.
  • Introduction to research in Higher Education.

b) On-site phase (Costa Rica, October 17-24, 2025)

  • Comparative higher education.
  • Higher education policies.
  • Institutional quality management.
  • University – Society Relationship.
  • Institutional data analysis and learning analytics.
  • Research Ethics.
  • Artificial intelligence in higher education.
  • Internationalization and international collaborations.
  • Identity and faculty work.
  • Colloquium of participants’ research works.

Participants in the Inter-American School of Higher Education (ESIES) will be offered a preferential rate for registration to the Conference of the Americas on International Education – (CAEI-2025). This opportunity will enable them to maximize their time in Costa Rica by attending this important regional forum. The CAEI convenes leading actors and decision-makers involved in the internationalization of higher education across the Americas, facilitating the development of professional networks, the exchange of best practices, and the advancement of academic cooperation in the region.

The registration fee  includes(*):

  • 9 hotel nights (October 16 to 25) in Costa Rica (4-star hotel)(**)
  • 6 lunches (October 18, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24).
  • Welcome dinners.
  • Simultaneous translation (French, English, Portuguese and Spanish).
  • 40 hours of training.
  • Certificate of participation and digital badge.
  • CAEI-2025 registration (optional). 
    • Participants registered for ESIES-2025 who wish to participate in the 9th edition of the Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAEI) will have a preferential registration fee with a 35% reduction ($ 500.00 USD) and should provide for lodging costs during the event).
    • The CAEI registration fee is additional to the ESIES-2025 registration fee, but can be paid at the same time and the participant will receive a detailed invoice for the total amount of the payment.

 

(*) Selected participants will receive payment instructions by e-mail. 

(**) Participants may check into the hotel on Friday, October 17 and/or check out on Friday, October 24. In this case, the hotel cost will be adjusted at the rate of US$87 per night.

(***) The registration fee for Costa Rican participants who do not require a hotel is as follows:

Olivier Bégin-Caouette, Ph.D.

Department of Administration and Foundations of Education

University of Montreal, Canada

Olivier Bégin-Caouette, Ph.D., is an associate professor of comparative higher education at the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the University of Montreal. In this role, he is responsible for training programs on higher education within his institution. He is also a founding co-member and director of the Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory on Higher Education, the largest group of researchers in higher education in the Francophone world. With LIRES, he co-organized in 2019 the first Doctoral School on Higher Education at the University of Montreal. His research focuses on the internationalization of higher education, international competitive dynamics, and transformations of the academic profession. He is also responsible for the Canadian team within the international project The Future of the Academic Profession (Future-AP).

María Jacqueline Rojas Ríos, Ph.D.

Faculty of Education Sciences

University of Playa Ancha, Chile

María Jacqueline Rojas Ríos holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Playa Ancha. She is currently a tenured professor at the Faculty of Education Sciences of the University of Playa Ancha and a researcher at the Inter-University Institute for Educational Research (IESED-Chile) in the area of Higher Education policies, where she has several publications and has coordinated national and international projects. She is part of the faculty of the consortium Ph.D. program in Education of the University of Playa Ancha, University of Los Lagos, and University of Antofagasta in Chile and integrates the council and core of the Master’s Program in Management and Leadership of Educational Organizations. She is currently the Coordinator of the RED project “Internationalization of Research in Higher Education”. 

Ricardo Pérez Mora, Ph.D.

University of Guadalajara, Mexico

Ricardo Pérez holds a Ph.D. in Education. He is a research professor at the University of Guadalajara, attached to the Department of Public Policy at the University Center for Economic and Administrative Sciences (CUCEA). He is currently the coordinator of the Ph.D. program in Educational Systems and Environments at the same university.

He is the coordinator of the International GT “Politicized Social Science” of CLACSO and General Coordinator of the Network of Studies on Educational Institutions in Mexico. His research lines are: “Sociology of the University”, “Actors and Policies of Higher Education” and “Production and Mobilization of Knowledge”. He is a member of the National System of Researchers level III and PRODEP Profile.

Cristina Maria d’Ávila Teixeira, Ph.D.

Universidade Federal da Bahia, Brazil

Cristina d’Ávila holds a Ph.D. in Education from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Didactics of Higher Education at the Sorbonne Paris V University and the University of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She is currently a full professor at the Faculty of Education of the Federal University of Bahia and a researcher at the Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory on Higher Education (LIRES) at the University of Montreal. She is also a productivity researcher for the National Research Council of Brazil (CNPq). Scientific Director of the National Association of Didactics and Teaching Practices (ANDIPE). She has published eighteen books in the field of education. She is a permanent professor in the Postgraduate Program of the Faculty of Education of the UFBA, where she served as vice-coordinator from 2019 to 2021. She is the general coordinator of the Center for Teacher Training and Pedagogical Advisory (NUFAP) of the Federal University of Bahia.

Marcel André Théza Manríquez, Ph.D.

Marcel André Théza Manríquez, Doctor in Political Science from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. Director of the Interuniversity Institute for Educational Research (IESED-Chile) and Researcher at the Center for Studies of Regional Development and Public Policy (CEDER), University of Los Lagos, Chile. His research areas are fundamentally oriented towards the field of political theory, cultural changes, public policies, and transformations in citizenship and participation. In recent years, in addition to academic research, he has developed strategic management activities in the higher education system of Chile and in the science, technology, knowledge, and innovation systems.

Felipe Alpizar Rodríguez, Ph.D

University of Costa Rica

Felipe Alpízar Rodríguez holds a Ph.D in Political Science from the Complutense University of Madrid, where he also completed his Master’s degree. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science at the University of Costa Rica, where he has worked since 2005 as a professor and researcher. He has held executive positions at the University of Costa Rica (Vice-Rector of Teaching, Academic Secretary, Director of the Center for Research and Political Studies) and high-responsibility positions in international organizations (Program Officer for the United Nations Development Program UNDP). He has been a consultant to international organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), UNDP, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO) and national organizations such as the Estado de la Nación Program (PEN). He has published several books, scientific articles, book chapters and opinion articles on national politics, the State, development, democracy, public opinion studies, environmental policy and water management. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Texas Tech University, Costa Rica.

Sébastien Béland, Ph.D

University of Montreal, Canada

Sébastien Béland is a professor at the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Montreal. He teaches quantitative methods and learning assessment. His research interests include the development and teaching of statistics and psychometrics, academic integrity, and learning assessment in arts programs at the post-secondary level. He has published in several scientific journals such as Applied Psychological Measurement, Behavior Research Methods, BMC Medical Education, International Journal of Testing, JAMA Network Open, Journal of Applied Measurement, Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, Measure and Evaluation in Education, Psychological Methods, and Rasch Measurement Transaction. Sébastien is a member of several research groups, including the Interuniversity Observatory on Innovative Learning Assessment Practices (OPIEVA), the Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory on Higher Education (LIRES), the Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Missions of Higher Education team (RIMES), the Open Statistics Teaching Initiative (OSTI), and the Research Group on Admission to Medicine in Quebec (GRAM-Q).

Normand Roy, Ph.D.

Department of Psychopedagogy and Andragogy

Université de Montréal, Canada

Normand Roy is a professor in the Department of Psychopedagogy and Andragogy at the University of Montreal. Passionate about the use of technology in education, his main research interests focus on emerging technologies (virtual reality, creative creation and fabrication) as well as the place of digital technology in society (artificial intelligence, open educational resources). He is particularly interested in the educational potential of digital technology and the conditions that promote its relevant and pedagogical use. He conducts work in both the youth sector and at the post-secondary level.

He is the director of the Interuniversity Research Group on the Pedagogical Integration of Technologies (GRIIPTIC), Co-director of the Living Laboratory on Innovation and Learning in Higher Education (LAVIA), Head of the Digital Pole, and a member of the observatories on artificial intelligence / Education Axis (OBVIA) and on student mental health in higher education (OSMÉES).

Gerardo Blanco, Ed.D. 

Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) 

Boston College, USA

Gerardo Blanco is a full-time research professor and academic director of the Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) at Boston College. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education and a member of the academic council of the doctoral program at the Catholic University of Milan. He serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Studies in International Education and as an associate editor of the journal Higher Education.

Ivonne Esmeralda Vargas Celis, M.Ph.
School of Nursing

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

Ivonne Esmeralda Vargas Celis holds a Master’s degree in Ethics from the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium. She is an Associate Professor at the School of Nursing of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Her research areas primarily focus on research ethics, citizen participation in health, vulnerability and care, and critical thinking.

In recent years, she has served as Chair of the Scientific Ethics Committee of Health Sciences at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, where she has developed a plan to improve the Committee’s process management and has proposed guidance for researchers in the field of research ethics.

Bruno Poellhuber, Ph.D.

Full Professor

Department of Psychopedagogy and Andragogy, Faculty of Educational Sciences

Director of the Living Lab on Innovation and Learning in Higher Education

Full Professor in the Faculty of Educational Sciences and the Academic Director of the Center for University Pedagogy at the University of Montréal, Bruno Poellhuber’s research focuses on the use of emerging digital technologies in higher education (artificial intelligence, virtual reality, etc.) for learning, teaching, and collaboration. He also investigates digital competencies, different training modalities, and innovative models of professional development to help teachers work in these contexts.

 

Together with Normand Roy, he leads the work of LAVIA (the Living Lab for Innovation in Higher Education Learning) on the pedagogical potential of virtual reality, video games, and artificial intelligence, serving as co-head of the virtual reality division. In this capacity, he carries out various research and development projects.
